THANK YOU for your generous support of #MoveTogether—you have my extreme gratitude!

Together we have raised more than $43,000 for the #MoveTogether movement! We surpassed our original fundraising goal of $30,000 by nearly 50%—thanks to all of you!

Thanks to everyone’s generous support, we are able to give more than $11,000 apiece to these three incredible organizations:

  • Guardian Baltimore, led by Artistic Director Breai Mason-Campbell
  • Cleveland Junior Jitterbugs, led by Valerie Salstrom
  • Lindy Hoppers of the African Diaspora Fund for the Frankie Manning Foundation (a new social justice fund), led by Tena Morales-Armstrong & Julia Loving

This was quite an accomplishment! We are very proud of the impact that this is going to have in our dance community, as well as communities of color.

Please continue to donate to the Move Together Fund! Your future donations will go towards the continual development of next steps and future events. This is a movement, not a moment—and it still needs your support!

Stay tuned for future events! We’re working to ensure sure that we come back stronger!

  • Though currently unemployed, I spent a year and a half profiting off of appropriated black and minority dances as a professional American Ballroom instructor and will take advantage of every opportunity I can afford to give a little bit where I can. Watching the move Together panel talk drove home how important it is to continue that work where I can.

  • Thank you so much for providing these resources for me to continue learning. I will strive to make change here in my swing scene in Austin, Texas. We have major issues of appropriation that go hand in hand with the history of segregation and gentrification in the city.

  • I’m interested in learning. This was very educational for me and I hope the conversation continues.

  • I’m so grateful to this panel for sharing this conversation. Thank you!

  • I can think of little else that would have make the likes of Frankie, Norma, Dawn, all of the Black elders of lindy hop that our community claims to revere more proud than what the Move Together panelists did today. This is a discussion and a movement long overdue, and I in awe of the leadership, thought, history and vulnerability that went into your discussion today. I cannot wait to see what this collaboration brings. Congratulations, and thank you to everyone to worked to make this happen.

  • The messages in the discussion were difficult to receive, but I’m sure even more difficult to deliver. By opening yourselves up and speaking so honestly you pulled me from understanding the outlines to viscerally feeling the impact of these issues on real and beautiful and courageous people. I can’t thank you enough for stepping up to do this.

  • This talk was so helpful. Looking forward to being involved in making our dance scene more welcoming

  • Proud to support this wonderful cause and to try to help make our dance community more inclusive and respectful of the dance’s roots.

  • The Move Together group of people are putting so much work and emotional labour into building our dance communities and aiding anti-racist work right now, giving what I can is thanks for that and belief in the projects the money supports <3

  • Thank you for the panel discussion today! Lindsey Wells and I watched live and have been discussing for the past couple of hours. So much food for thought!

  • I love the mission and the groups you’re supporting. Thanks for putting together the panel today & bringing to light so many voices & experiences & knowledge. We’ve got a ways to go, but events and funds like this help everyone figure out the way forward.

  • Showing support for this extremely important work. Thank you for taking the time to do this, thank you for your hard work and your time and your passion. I am listening and I am here to learn, grow, acknowledge my biases, and contribute in a positive way.

  • Thank you all for coming together to share your wisdom and experience.. So happy this conversation is happening in our community!

  • Thank you for setting up the panel and sharing the information with our community.

  • I want to help and keep taking steps to be part of the solution and encourage others to do the same. Thank you for organizing this.

  • Thank you for this work! As a community and as individuals, we can and must do better!

  • Frankie was a muse! It was an honor, privilege and SO MUCH FUN to learn from him in New York, New York with the Wednesday Night/sometimes Thursday Night Hoppers—and then go out to dinner with him and our group. With this donation, I hope to pass along a scintilla of Frankie’s generosity and joy.

  • Music and dance have been a consistent source of happiness for nearly all of my life and nearly all the music I listen to and dance to has its roots in Black culture. It has also been my experience that the more you know about any activity you engage in, the more you’ll enjoy it.

  • I want to lead an inclusive dance scene locally and need greater awareness of the issues being faced and knowledge about how create inclusivity.

  • I think this work is awesome! I think it’s great to support Black artists, dancers, and musicians, especially in a community that directly owes its origins to the Black community.

  • This is an essential movement and I wholeheartedly support it! Best wishes, Mark

  • Thank you for all the work and love you are putting into educating and supporting the dance community

  • I am donating because I believe that there is selective inclusivity within the scene and we must fight it together

  • Thank you for helping us all do better in supporting this Black art form that we love and the culture and people responsible for it and this amazing community!

  • We are firm believers in training West Coast Swing dancers and teachers about the real history, culture, and values of Swing dancing, so they understand how WCS evolved and why.

We are donating 1/3 of the total we raised during our You Gotta Groove workshop this past Tuesday. The workshop was intended as a fundraiser in the West Coast Swing community to support 3 organizations dedicated to the preservation of real history of Swing and anti-racism education in the dance community: Move Together, The Frankie Manning Foundation, and Herrang Dance Camp.

Thank you for your good work! M&T

  • Thank you for doing this! I look forward to learning and making actionable change for a better, anti-racist community.

  • I have been a part of the swing dancing community since 1999 and have never experienced a joy that compares to the joy I received from dancing, learning, and being a part of this community. I have gained beautiful relationships as a result and honor and cherish this gift that has been graciously passed down and shared. Such an awesome mission and happy to support! All my love!

  • I want to support and help in what ways I can to help the community grow and learn what more I can actively do.

  • I am a white, British blues dancer. The blues community in Bristol are like my family. I felt lost before them. I came to blues at a time of personal sorrow. I craved human connection, touch, acceptance and love, which is what I found. I am deeply grateful for blues dancing, and my community here. I know that I and we as a community need to do more to honor the black heritage of blues dance and take ownership of our role in discrimination/racism/cultural appropriation/white privilege and to learn and change and to actively and financially feed back into and empower dancers, teachers and musicians of colour.

  • Thank you for the valuable work you are doing to make the swing dance scene more equitable and welcoming.

  • This looks to be an important and informative event. I’ll share event details across our channels as well. Looking forward to it!

  • Thank you for your work in moving our dance community into a beautifully diverse, and equitable future.

  • Always happy to support black artists (and especially my local Junior Jitterbugs here in Cleveland!!!).

  • I believe in the importance of POC voices being heard, especially when it is their history that is being overwritten and an art form with such a past.

  • I am just grateful that I can give support to the artists and the artform of Swing. Thank you for all you do.

  • Laura Keat, Kim and David Frutos,
Thank you for addressing racism in the swing dance community and ways to move towards inclusion.
    Kathleen H.

  • Racism is pervasive everywhere we look, and very much so in America. It plays out in horrific, and sometimes in subtle ways, but we must work together to rid society of it. I want to do my part.

  • In the words of Wynton Marsalis: “We need healers. We have to talk about music and life, because, ultimately, they end up as one and the same. All of it tracks back to how you heal your culture one patient at a time, beginning with yourself.” (To a Young Jazz Musician: Letters from the Road).

  • Thank you for all you do to use dance to connect children (and adults) to the history and wonder of swing dance and the music and people who shaped it.

  • Thank you for your time and effort creating this movement! This is so needed! I’m excited to learn and grow as we move forward.

  • Thank you so much for creating this movement! The Lindy community deeply needs this.

  • Thank you for putting in the time and effort to make a difference. We cannot wait to learn and grow together!

  • I have already donated to multiple BLM causes, but I love that this one ties in Swing Dancing! Although I am a WCS dancer, I know where my roots came from!!! This is fantastic – thank you all for doing this!

  • Knowledge is powerful! Honest discussions about difficult race related topics in our dance community are a must! Supporting our youth, our current dancers, performers and instructors of the African diaspora is what will sustain our village.

  • Our community is so in need of change. I am incredibly grateful for the time and emotional labor you all are putting into helping us learn and move forward.

  • Love to help spread the joy of dance, plus the connectivity to history, culture, and community in any small way…. plus the purely selfish reason of having more wonderful people to dance with!

  • Thank you for organizing , I think this will help all of us when we can all be together again. Let’s do the work for a better, anti-racist dance community!

  • Thank you for doing this! The San Diego, Ca swing dance community is here!!! ❤️

  • Thank you for all that you are doing and all that you are sharing with us.

  • This is important. Special shout out to Junior Jitterbugs and Valerie Salstrom’s unstinting efforts to introduce Lindy Hop’s next generation to the rest of us!

  • When I didnt have the courage to speak dance gave me a language. When I didnt have the courage to look at myself in the mirrors of a dance studio the music and the movements moved me away to another world. When I am unable to keep myself together a dance partner probides me with inspiration to laugh and play and forget my worries. Dance works miracles every day. If we share dance with eachother we share life.

  • I’m happy to be part of supporting both the conversation that Move Together is hosting on this panel, and the charities you’ve chosen. And look forward to the way that this conversation will also enrich my understanding of West Coast Swing both in our history and our present state.

  • Thank you. I am looking forward to the July 11th event, and the ensuing discussions and changes in the community that it inspires. I am committed to being a part of the change.

  • Thank you for putting this together, I am looking forward to the opportunity for learning and growth for myself and to help make my scene more inclusive for our dancers of color.

  • Thank you for giving me an opportunity to support the dance teachers and musicians and to learn more about the African-American heritage of swing dance.

  • Black lives matter! Keep staying strong! Keep challenging your assumptions! The Lindy Hop community is stronger for having these conversations. Thank you for putting this event on!

  • I am a white organizer in the fusion dance scene. I am a participant in many arts originating in cultures other than my own, including swing and blues dancing. I very much appreciate your work in bringing more awareness and sensitivity to me and others and I can’t wait to learn more at the MOVE Together event!

  • Thanks for putting this event together! This is so necessary and will be a great learning experience.

  • Thankful for all the resources coming together to celebrate Lindy Hop and its history. Excited to learn about this beautiful dance.

  • Thank-you for putting this event together, and for helping to make change in the global swing dance community <3

  • “Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.”

  • Really excited to be there for this talk and be part of moving our community forward. Huge thank you to everyone involved for all of your work!

  • Dance is a language that brings us all together no matter where we come from, or the color of our skin. I’m very proud of my friend for organizing this movement, and happy to be supporting. #MoveTogether

  • On board for shifting the culture of this community to honor and celebrate the roots of this dance!

  • I’m excited and honored to support this project, and looking forward to moving forward together as a dance community.

  • Shaheed: wonderful work! Love contributing to this kind of work in our community. Always open for collaborating in our blues community too. Much love!

  • Excited to attend, and a huge thank you to the organizers, artists, and panelists who’ve put a lot of work into making this happen.

  • Dance has always helped me make sense of the world. To get out of my head and into my body. To sweat away the pain. Happy to be a part of people bringing so much joy! Thank you for doing this and dancing to uplift.

  • I love the concept of using a historical Black American art form of diverse dancers to bring us all closer as a ‘human race’ during this challenging time in world history. We are truly in this together! #MOVETOGETHER/Asante

  • As a white dancer enjoying this dance, not supporting and not advocating for the Black community is an insult to the founders of lindy hop. I use to dance their dance while ignoring their suffering. Not anymore. Looking forward to learning how I can advocate inclusivity in my local scene.

  • Thank you for making Move Together a global movement and a great ressource for exchange, openness, learning, creating context and for support. A very good and needed way of improving the international dance community. Greetings from Germany. Sabine

  • I love this movement and this cause. We need to raise up black voices and promote programs that support people of color.

  • I highly appreciate all the efforts being put into this and want to keep learning and contributing.

  • I’m proud to support such outstanding movement and really hopeful for a more diverse and unified future. Thank you for your guidance and leadership Shaheed! You have my full support.

  • What a beautiful contribution to the dance community, our past, present and future!!!! Shaheed, you are amazing. Thank you all for diving in to make a difference.
    Dance Is life ♥️♥️♥️

  • It’s time for me (and my dance community) to move forward. Thank you so much!

  • SO excited to help raise some support for the black artists in our community and support these beautiful charities. What a wonderful way to contribute and make a positive impact. Thanks to all involved in putting it together. Much love, Ali
